" Drawings are the thinking before painting for me. Charcoal and graphite are just two media I use – and both provide a wide range of options in terms of application.

The drawings 2 and 3 still have the ‘sensation of place’ idea that I have been working with over the past 4 years – not quite identifying the location while having an indication of how that place had ‘felt’. .

Numbers 1,,4,5, and 6 are examples of gestural abstraction.  The rhythm of the process is what dictates and each mark is dictated by those that came before it . In this way the four corners of the paper , the charcoal or pastel and the movement of the artist’s hand is all there is.   The challenge is to make an image that conveys the magic of the process."
